AN AWARD-WINNING author will read parts of his latest novel at the top of a lighthouse in an exclusive event today.

Cole Moreton’s first novel, The Light Keeper, is set in the South Downs.

So the writer has decided to perform an intimate reading of his work to a small group of lucky competition winners at the top of the Belle Tout lighthouse near Birling Gap.

Built in 1832, the building sits on the edge of the 400ft high Beachy Head cliffs and boasts expansive views of the national park and English Channel.

The event will see Cole share stories and sing songs based around his debut novel to a group of 12 people.

It will be the first performance to be held at Belle Tout, which has been used as a bed and breakfast in recent years.

Mr Moreton said: “As one of the winners has told me, this is an opportunity of a lifetime.”

The former journalist, who has spent much of the last few years being the writer in residence at the lighthouse, said: “I feel so privileged to do this.

“The lighthouse has become very special to me personally.”

Mr Moreton lives in nearby Eastbourne and during the event he will reveal some of the true stories behind the events featured in the book.

It was released last month and has already received plaudits from several esteemed reviewers and authors.

This includes Brighton-based novelist Peter James, best known for creating the much-loved character of detective superintendent Roy Grace.

The crime and thriller writer described The Light Keeper and said: “Mesmerising and lyrical, Cole creates atmosphere you can breathe and emotion that can shred your heart.

The Mail on Sunday added that “Cole writes with human warmth and bittersweet emotion”.

Decommissioned from its use as a lighthouse, the Belle Tout is currently being used as a bed and breakfast with themed rooms including The Captains Cabin, Old England and Keepers Loft.
