A BUSY seafront road will be closed at the weekend.

The A259 Kingsway in Brighton and Hove will be shut off for most of the day on Sunday as the city’s annual triathlon takes place.

The road is a key route into and out of the city and residents living to the west in Portslade, Southwick, Shoreham and Worthing will have to find an alternative route into Brighton during the event.

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman said: “The A259 Kingsway will be closed this Sunday from 6am to 2pm for the Brighton and Hove Triathlon.

“The closure will be from Western Street to Wish Road along the A259.

“All the roads leading down to Kingsway from Western Road, Palmeira Square, Church Road, New Church Road will be open to drive into and down, but road users will not be able to turn onto Kingsway.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this will cause.”

This is the Brighton and Hove Triathlon’s fourth year organising the event which sees athletes through a gruelling run, swim and bike ride.

Competitors can choose between three distances.

The SuperSprint event will see athletes dash through a 400 metre swim, 5km bike ride and 2.5km run while the longest of the three events, the Olympic, will have participants make their way through a challenging course which includes a 1500 metre swim, a 40km bike ride and a 10km run.

There are also events for children including a Scootathlon in which a scooter ride replaces the swim.
