KFC is aiming to open at least nine new outlets in Sussex by the end of 2020 - most of them drive-thrus.
Among the target areas are Brighton, Hove, Lewes and Bolney.
A spokesman for the company said: "We have bold ambitions to have over 1,000 stores in the UK and Ireland by 2020.
"We are looking to build over 50 new stores a year."
It was understood the chain would offer incentives of £20,000 to people who find a new site in their target areas, as their website states "We pay £20,000 for all recognised introductions."
However, a KFC spokesperson has confirmed this is not the case and there will be no financial reward.
