AN UPDATED payment method on buses will speed up services and be “even more convenient” for passengers, say bus company bosses.

The new Tap On, Tap Off system allows travellers on Brighton and Hove Buses to use contactless payments without the need to buy a ticket or talk to the driver.

Customers just have to tap their bank card or phone on the ticket machine as they board the bus, then tap it again on the “exit reader” as they disembark.

So, there is no need for passengers using the new method to tell the driver where they want to go.

Commercial Director Nick Hill said: “We’re always looking for ways to make it easier for people to catch the bus and Tap On, Tap Off is a natural part of that. It should also speed up boarding and keep buses moving.”

The ticket price is also automatically capped at the cost of a bus day ticket if the customer makes several journeys using Brighton and Hove Buses.

Mr Hill said: “This means you get the best value fare without having to ask for it, or even know about it.

“That’s especially good news for visitors and occasional bus users.”

This update follows the company’s move to accept of contactless payments in Autumn last year.

The Tap On, Tap Off system was introduced on Brighton and Hove Buses yesterday.

It is not necessary to register for this service, but the bus company warned that passengers will have to use the same payment card for every journey for the price cap to apply.
