GROUPS want to “light the skies” with thousands of candles to raise awareness of infant deaths.

Buildings and landmarks across the country will be illuminated in blue and pink between October 9 and 15 to mark Baby Loss Awareness Week.

This is an event formed by an alliance of 60 charities and organisations including Brighton and Worthing Sands, a group of volunteers which offer support to bereaved parents in Brighton, Hove and Worthing.

Michelle Simpson, the groups chairwoman, said: “Sadly, many parents do not receive the support they need. Care can vary depending on when

and where they experience a loss.

“Sands aim to offer support to anyone affected by baby loss.

“Our befriending service is a listening ear for anyone who wants to talk to someone who really ‘gets it’, families talk about the pride and love they have for their babies and it is a friendly supportive conversation with parents who have a shared experience.”

On October 15, which is also International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, people are being urged to join a “Wave of Light”.

This involves decorating their workplaces in pink and blue and lighting a candle at 7pm, leaving it burning for at least an hour “to remember all babies that have died too soon.”

There will also be a quiz night at 7:15pm on October 11 at the Harbour Club at

Shoreham Reach to raise funds for Brighton and Worthing Sands.
