A FIRE destroyed a row of cars in a residential street.

The blackened shells of the vehicles were left on the road with several pieces of the cars having been destroyed or melted off.

The Argus:

The incident happened in the early hours of yesterday morning in Elphick Road, Newhaven.

Police now say they are treating the incident as an arson attack and are seeking two moped riders who were seen near the site of the blaze.

One resident who woke up to the scene of destruction said it made her feel like she was “in a horror film”.

She said: “I just couldn’t believe what I walked out to.

The Argus:

“The people whose cars it happened to are the kindest people and don’t deserve this at all.”

She said firemen had banged on residents doors at about 3am to warn them of the blaze.

The Argus:

She said: “My neighbours don’t have an exit around the back of their house so all they could do was watch and hope the flames went out.

“The flames were hitting their windows.”

The residents were eventually able to exit their house after fire crews brought the blaze under control.

Many of the cars in the street have now had their windows boarded up and have been left unusable.

The Argus:

In some cases the bonnet has been completely burnt through exposing the engine beneath.

A witness said she saw six cars which had been affected.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for comment.
