CITY centre buildings were evacuated after a suspected gas leak at a building site.
This included college Dv8 Sussex which has closed its Brighton campus in Queen Square for the day due to the incident.
A spokesman said: "Due to a suspected gas leak at a building site next door to Dv8 in Queens Square in Brighton, the entire square has been been evacuated without clear indication of the time it will take to fix the issue.
"Gas engineers are at the site now and we hope the issue will be fixed as soon as possible.
"As a safety precaution we have closed the Dv8 Brighton campus for the day and will keep all Dv8 students updated via our social media channels and website with information on when Dv8 will re-open."
At 1.30pm college staff said the area had been deemed safe and they were allowed back into the building.
