FIREFIGHTERS remain at the scene after a fire broke out in a prison.

Two crews from Lewes and Brighton were called to HMP Lewes at 10.10am.

It is understood that a fire had broken out in a cell.

The fire service said: “We were called to Lewes Prison following reports of a small fire in a cell.

“We have firefighters at the scene, with crews Lewes and Brighton.”

Crews were still at the prison in Brighton Road, Lewes, at 11am.

The Ministry of Justice says the flames caused minor damage and no one was injured, and said the fire was put out by prison staff.
