AN ELDERLY woman sustained serious head injuries after being hit by a cyclist in a seafront road.
Police blocked off Marine Parade in Worthing after the collision happened at 2.50pm.
They were joined at the scene by ambulance and air ambulance crews.
A passerby said: "It looks like it is really serious.
"I think a cyclist was knocked down.
"The air ambulance is still here and the road around the pier is closed off."
Sussex Police said air ambulance had attended but the woman had been taken to hospital by road.
A spokesman said: "At 2.50pm a woman pedestrian in her early seventies and a cyclist were in collision at Marine Parade, Worthing.
"The woman was taken by road ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital to be treated for a serious head injury.
"The cyclist was not reported to have been injured.
"Anyone who was what happened can contact the police online or by calling 101, quoting Operation Garston."
An AA spokesman said: "The road is closed and there is slow traffic due to a crash in Marine Parade both ways from The Royal Arcade to The Steyne."
