SHOPPERS described the “eerie” experience of shopping at an almost empty supermarket.

The shelves at the Co-op store in London Road, Brighton, were left bare as customers made the most of its closing down sale.

The Argus:

The store dramatically slashed its prices for its last day of trading on Saturday, with a selection of “last chance deals” and 50 per cent of all frozen items.

One shopper said: “It’s quite an odd experience, it feels really eerie.

The Argus:

“There is pretty much nothing left in the shop at all.

“It’s always sad to see a high street store shut.

“But I have managed to grab a few bargains before it shuts.”

Just hours after the store shut its doors for the final time workers came and prised the bright green Co-op branding from the front of the shop.

The Argus:

The supermarket is next door to a Boots store which closed on September 20.

Both shops are set to be turned into student accommodation.
