A SUSPECTED gunman was arrested last night after armed police raided a home.
Residents say they were told to sleep elsewhere while they raided the house in Richmond Road, Brighton, at about 9.30pm.
A 61-year-old man from Brighton has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and the possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate and remains in police custody at this stage.
One said: "We watched the police, some armed, some with dogs, surround the house a few doors down from us and try to gain entry.
"The police had blocked off our road and told neighbours their kids would probably not be able to get back home until it was over and so best stay with relatives."
Witnesses say about 20 officers, some armed with guns, surrounded the home with a dog unit while police diverted cars from the road.
Sussex Police said this was a "pre-planned intelligence-led operation on a single property" and the scene has been secured for searches to be carried out.
Another resident said: "It's just awful to see this happening, we're a sleepy street, this isn't Detroit.
"It makes me concerned about my safety."
