A FUNDRAISER set up after a fire devastated a set of flats has received enormous support.

The fire destroyed buildings in Pankhurst Avenue in Brighton on September 20, leaving about 50 people homeless.

Ten fire crews spent the whole night trying to put out the fire after being called at 8.30pm.

So a GoFundMe page called Pankhurst Flats Fire Campaign was set up to “raise money for the families who have lost everything”.

It has now received 355 donations and raised more than £24,600.

Georgina Benson, who organised the fundraiser along with Carina Cox, posted on the page to thank those who donated.

She said: “Wow, how amazing. It’s so brilliant to see the community coming together to support our neighbours. Just a quick update to let you know that the money will be transferred to the council who will then, with the residents effected, decide how they want to distribute the money and what they will spend it on.”
