MPs were in the House of Commons on a Saturday for the first time since 1982.
The last time it happened, Argentina had invaded the Falklands.
It was expected that MPs would be asked to decide if they would vote for Boris Johnson's Brexit deal - a deal which saw Theresa May's controversial backstop scrapped.
But instead, an amendment which forces the Prime Minister to write to ask for an extension was passed.
That amendment was put forward by a Conservative MP, Oliver Letwin, who said it was intended to be an insurance policy to stop an "accidental" no deal.
The Government had said that voting for the amendment was a vote for delay - and a defiant Mr Johnson told the Commons afterwards that he would not negotiate a further delay.
Guto Bebb, who had the Conservative whip withdrawn for voting against the Government, was one of 10 former Tory MPs who voted for the Letwin amendment. Others included former chancellor Philip Hammond and cabinet member Amber Rudd.
