HUNDREDS of activists are planning to protest at an arms factory after the company was linked to war crimes in Yemen.

The Argus revealed in July how attacks on a civilian target were carried out using weapon parts made at the EDO MBM factory in Moulsecoomb, Brighton.

We reported how UN inspectors took photographs of fragments of a bomb used in a Saudi-led coalition airstrike on a water pump factory.

Written on the side of a fragment were the words “EDO MBM” – the name of the arms manufacturer in Brighton.

Following the revelation, a cross-party coalition of councillors and MPs called for a clampdown on the Brighton arms manufacturer.

City council leader Nancy Platts wrote to Defence Secretary Ben Wallace demanding an enquiry after reading the story in this paper.

Now campaigners against the arms trade have organised a mass demonstration at the factory at Home Farm Business Park, to demand the factory’s licence be “revoked immediately”.

A spokeswoman for Brighton Against The Arms Trade said: “We want to show the council that we support the its decision to write the secretary of defence.

“But we also want to show that this isn’t enough.

“The council is calling for an investigation, but it is clear to us that the investigation has already taken

place ad and the UN report is clear.

“It is also clear that EDO MBM should have its licence revoked immediately.”

The demonstration will be held between 4pm and 6pm on November 6.

It will be held outside the factory in Home Farm Road, Moulsecoomb.

Organisers say it will be a “family friendly” affair, and are calling for people to “bring banners, placards, drums, sparklers and as many friends and comrades as you can muster”.

Kemptown MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle, a member of the Committees On Arms Export Controls, said: “My view is that it has been shown that parts from EDO’s factory have been used to bomb people in a war that is legally dubious in Yemen and Brighton and Hove and should not be part of this war killing innocent people.”

Mr Russell-Moyle added that he is planning to attend the demonstration and

give a statement to the protesters.

EDO MBM was contacted for comment.
