DIRK Campbell’s campaign to get his daughter’s body home from Syria is simply heartbreaking.

It is shameful that 18 months on from Lewes-born Anna Campbell’s death in the city of Afrin, the British and Turkish governments have done nothing to bring her remains home.

Mr Campbell deserves to be able to see his daughter again. This should not be a political issue.

All parties involved must get their act together and get Ms Campbell home as soon as possible, especially as tensions are coming to a head in Syria.

The Syrian Civil War has been uniquely complex, involving a huge amount of factions and countries across the Middle East.

But with a ceasefire agreed between Turkey and the Kurdish state of Rojava, for whom Ms Campbell fought for, it is high time something was done to end Mr Campbell’s grief.

Whatever your thoughts are on the war, every effort should be made to get Ms Campbell back to Britain.

We cannot imagine the uncertainty and worry her father has felt for the past 18 months and it is a disgrace nothing has been done.

It seems the worst fighting of the war is over, although we can never be sure.

But while a ceasefire is agreed, it is imperative our Government talks to Turkey and ensures Mr Campbell will be able to see his daughter again.

We can only hope his new legal campaign to get Ms Campbell home ends up being a success as it is clear he has exhausted all other options.

If Mr Campbell never sees his daughter again, it is the Government that will have failed him.
