A YOUNG man who died an hour after being found at the bottom of a cliff has been named.

He was Brighton resident Thomas Hollands.

Police were called at 2.14pm last Tuesday by witnesses who said they saw a man had plunged from the cliffs in Marine Drive, Rottingdean, coroner’s officer Michael Bebe said.

Officers found a man at the undercliff and were joined at the scene by ambulance crews and the Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance service.

Attempts to resuscitate him lasted about an hour but he was pronounced dead at 3.19pm.

Following his death his body was taken to the Brighton and Hove City Mortuary in Lewes Road. No post-mortem examination was carried out and police have said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

An inquest into his death was yesterday opened and adjourned. Assistant coroner Catharine Palmer gave a provisional cause of death as multiple injuries after falling from height.

Police searched the cliff top and found several items including a wallet containing a driver’s licence identifying the man as Thomas Hollands, 23, a laboratory technician who lived in Gladstone Road.

Statements will be sought from his family, witnesses, his GP, mental health services and emergency services before a full inquest is held on February 27.
