BUSINESSES, sports clubs and community groups have responded “overwhelmingly” to a fundraising campaign for a little boy with leukaemia.

Six-year-old Denny Nassey was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when he was only three, and his little sister Marley was diagnosed at 18 months.

Despite going into full remission after chemotherapy, Denny has relapsed twice, and his family are now seeking treatment for him abroad.

Denny’s aunt Monique Laurens said the treatment he needs, which is known as CAR-T therapy, is not available for his particular form of cancer on the NHS.

She said: “The treatment is around £500,000 and is available in a few places, including America, but then you have the cost of flights.

“This is a lot to raise, but what choice do we have? We have to try.”

Monique, who lives in Hastings, set up a GoFundMe page for Denny and word spread quickly about the campaign.

She said: “No sooner did we find out about Denny needing treatment did we have emails with people offering help, and even making T-shirts.

“I’ve never seen a town pull together so much.

“Every supermarket has a bucket at the till, every pub and cafe has a tin and there are events everywhere.”

Monique said despite the incredible response from communities across Sussex, it can still be hard to be optimistic.

“It’s amazing what everyone is doing but it’s still very grey. We need the money to be raised within three weeks.”

Monique fears Denny may not live to see Christmas if he does not get treatment soon.

She said: “Go and have fun for Denny.”
