AN 83-year-old woman who crocheted hundreds of blankets for a rescue dog centre was invited in to see her handiwork.

Peggy Letten, who has dementia and lives at Kathleen’s Lodge care home in Shoreham, was given a tour of the Dog’s Trust Rehoming Centre in Shoreham.

Dog-lover Peggy was delighted to see all her blankets distributed amongst the hounds.

When asked why she donates the blankets, Peggy said: “I do it because they’re lovely, lonely dogs. Someone has to love them.

“Every time I knit a blanket, I imagine a rescue dog snuggling on it.”

Peggy’s friend Nicky Bingham visits her twice a week, and said Peggy has donated more than 200 blankets.

She said: “Peggy spends all day, every day, knitting these blankets for dogs in need.

“Each blanket takes about two days to knit.

“When I saw Peggy at the weekend she had already crocheted two new blankets since her trip to the Dogs Trust on Friday – she’s a star.”

Peggy sadly had give up her pet chihuahua when she moved in to the care home last year, due to her dementia.

Tracey Rae, rehoming centre manager at Dog’s Trust Shoreham said the centre is grateful for Peggy’s support.

She said: “We decided to award her with a certificate to say thanks for all of her hard work, as we have been absolutely blown away by her efforts and the kindness she has shown towards our rescue dogs.

“It’s clear how much time Peggy has put into crocheting the blankets, as there is beautiful detail on every one.

“They are all very colourful so will brighten up the kennels and hopefully attract some extra attention for our four-legged-friends.”

“With the chill of the winter months starting to creep up on us I know our dogs are very pleased to put them to good use - and they love feeling extra cosy.”
