A STRONG storm created a bizarre scene as it covered a promenade with pebbles.
The beach was left level with the seafront streets in Hove as strong winds and surging tides battered the seafront.
Some benches were half-submerged in the stones as the waves washed them up onto the esplanade.
One beachgoer found it was a long way down as he took a seat, sitting just inches off the floor.
The comical moment was captured by Brighton resident Marisa Broadfoot.
She said: “It was a surreal sight. There’s normally about a four foot drop behind the railings onto the beach.
“Walking on the prom felt more like an extension to the beach.
“I’ve lived in Brighton most of my life and only ever seen this once before in January 2014 when I must say that I was amazed that it was all cleared within a few days.”
A Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman said the authority had been working hard to return the beach and promenade to normal and make both safe again.
He said: “Be careful cycling or walking along the promenade after Saturday’s storms.
“We will be clearing the pebbles over the next few days.
“Saturday’s winds were the strongest we’ve seen in many years.
“Our Cityclean and seafront staff worked throughout the weekend to keep us all as safe as possible, and make sure the city kept running.
“There’s still work to do, so please bear with us.”
During the weekend, staff at Newhaven National Coastwatch Institution said they recorded “force 12 hurricane gusts” of 73mph.
The winds were so strong that some people were filmed clinging to lamp posts for stability.
