A THREE vehicle horror crash has left a man in hospital with severe injuries.

The air ambulance was called at 6.15am yesterday to reports of a crash involving three vehicles.

Police say a blue Mercedes-Benz Antos 18-tonne flat-bed lorry and a grey Volkswagen Crafter CR35 van both came to an abrupt halt while negotiating a roundabout.

The 51-year-old lorry driver left his cab to talk to the van driver but, as he did this, he was hit by a grey Citroen Picasso, driven by a 67-year-old man from East Grinstead.

He was taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, where he is being treated for potentially life-threatening injuries.

The incident happened on the A22 at the Lampool roundabout near Uckfield and surrounding roads were closed for five hours after the incident.

A Sussex Police spokesman urged anybody who saw the collision or has any information on it to contact the force.

He said: “Anyone who saw what happened, noticed any of the vehicles being driven shortly before the collision or who may have dash-cam footage is asked to contact Sussex Police online or call 101, quoting Operation Drybrook.”
