THE coastguard is advising people to avoid driving through flood waters.

Flood alerts have been issued across Sussex and the service have warned of the dangers.

A statement shared by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said that "with large parts of the country being affected by flooding" they are "urging the public to avoid driving through flood waters".

A spokesman added: "Just 30 centimetres of flowing water is enough to move a family car.

"Stay safe everyone."

The Government's Flood Information Service has issued several flood alerts in Sussex saying that "flooding is possible" and people should "be prepared" in these areas.

Warnings have been put in place in Combe Haven, Cuckmere Haven, Langney Haven, the River Uck and Upper Ouse in East Sussex, and Aldingbourne and Barnham Rifes in West Sussex.

The Argus:

This follows severe flooding in Cuckmere Haven (pictured) in recent weeks.

Last month residents said the situation was “critical” and said there was “dismay” over the Environment Agency’s refusal to dredge the river.

But despite the concern of villagers, farmers, and businesses the Environment Agency has said it will not spend public funds to dredge the river unless there is a flood risk to people’s homes.

In 2007, the cost of dredging was estimated to be £50,000, it was reported.
