A FLOOD alert has been issued for Sussex.

The Government's Flood Information Service has issued a flood alert saying that "flooding is possible" and people should "be prepared" in these areas.

Warnings have been put in place in Cuckmere Haven.

The Environment Agency said river levels were forecast to rise at a monitoring station due to heavy rainfall.

The official warning was issued on Tuesday morning.

The agency said: "Please be prepared for the risk of flooding Thursday.

"Flooding of properties is possible. Please consider taking sensible precautionary measures in advance that may reduce potential impacts."

The Met Office yesterday issued a warning for heavy rain on Thursday, bringing possible transport disruptions from late afternoon onwards.

And Prime Minister Boris Johnson has passed on warnings there could be more flooding across the country this winter as rain continues.

Currently across the UK, five severe flood warnings are in place, which warn of a danger to life.

A further 29 flood warnings, where flooding is expected and immediate action is required, are in force across the River Don, Trent, Avon and various other rivers.

There are also 77 flood alerts in place, where people were warned to be prepared.

This follows severe flooding of the Cuckmere River in recent weeks.

Last month residents said the situation was “critical” and said there was “dismay” over the Environment Agency’s refusal to dredge the river.

But despite the concern of villagers, farmers, and businesses the Environment Agency has said it will not spend public funds to dredge the river unless there is a flood risk to people’s homes.

In 2007, the cost of dredging was estimated to be £50,000, it was reported.
