SPORTS stars from across the county are being honoured for their achievements.

Active Sussex has announced the shortlist of finalists for this years’ Sussex Sports Awards.

The winners will be announced at a star-studded ceremony at the Hilton Brighton Metropole on Friday, hosted by athletics star Kriss Akabusi and BBC radio presenter Danny Pike.

Sadie Mason, Active Sussex chief executive, said: “It’s been an incredible year for nominations.

“What this demonstrates to us is the exceptional and extraordinary quality of sports clubs and individuals currently competing, inspiring and working tirelessly across Sussex.”

Carden Primary School in Brighton is shortlisted for the Quality Start Active Primary School Of The year. The school offers an array of sports to develop pupils’ motor skills, teamwork, problem solving and a love for movement. It has also recently invested in reopening its swimming pool.

Whitehawk Football Club, based at the TerraPura Ground in Brighton, is shortlisted for club of the year. This year the club invited 30 children who lived in the Grenfell Tower block in London to spend a day by the seaside and be mascots at a Whitehawk home league game.

During this year’s Pride Whitehawk hosted, one of the biggest mixed gender matches ever played – between an ex-Premier League All Star team and LGBTQ XI players.

Bruce Warren, 57, a coach from Brighton Phoenix Athletics Club is shortlisted for the Southern Combination Football League coach of the year.

Albion’s charity arm Albion In The Community is shortlisted for the Everyone Active Community Impact Award for its Community Brighter Outlook programme which offers free, specialist support to anyone aged over 18 who has been diagnosed with cancer and lives in Brighton and Hove.

University of Sussex sports scholar and wheelchair sailor Jazz Turner is shortlisted for the Disabled Sports Personality of the Year. Jazz finished fourth in two events at the National Competition For Sailing and was the first female finisher in this year’s Brighton Half Marathon

David Jackson, who has spent 43 years refereeing, is up for the Wave Leisure Outstanding Contribution to Sport Award.

Both Sussex Thunder Netball Team and Brighton Men’s Rugby Union 1st Team are competing for the Rix and Kay Solicitors LLP Team of the Year.

Stuart Collier, 49, who has been club secretary at Withdean Youth Football Club for nine years is nominated for Sussex County FA Volunteer of the Year. His work behind the scenes ensures more than 300 players have first class training and match day facilities.

Also shortlisted is Andy Linley, from Shoreham who founded Sands United FC Brighton and Hove. The team of fathers who have experience the loss of a baby was set up in support of stillbirth and neonatal charity Sands.

Ricky Perrin, 40, manager of Sussex Bears wheelchair basketball team, is also up for the award.

Amber Anning, 18, from Brighton and Hove Athletics Club is shortlisted for the Platinum Publishing Group Young Sports Personality of the Year.

Finally, shortlisted for the University of Brighton Young Volunteer of the Year is McKenzie Howell, 22, from the University of Brighton Netball Club.
