A YOUNG child took a knife into a primary school.

Police were called after the incident at Mile Oak Primary School on Wednesday.

It is understood a classmate spotted the Year 4 pupil with a kitchen knife on school grounds

Headteacher Luke Lording has written to parents to reassure them and told them police had been called.

It follows a report last month that a child in Year 5 at Stanford Junior School in Brighton had shown a knife to fellow pupils, sparking alarm from parents.

Mr Lording said he realised the Mile Oak incident was “distressing” but said it had been dealt with.

In a letter home, seen by The Argus, he wrote: “You may have heard there was an incident at school on Wednesday where it was reported a child had brought a kitchen knife into school.

“We found this out after another child told their parent after school that day.

“I would like to reassure you that the school took immediate action.

“We have reported it to the police, and we have also dealt with the situation in line with the school’s behaviour and safeguarding policies.

“I realise this can be very distressing, so I would like everyone to know we will offer support to any child or parent who requires it.

“Our priority, as always, is to ensure a safe learning environment for all our children.”

Mile Oak Primary School was contacted for comment.

Meanwhile Brighton and Hove City Council said: “There was a situation at the school which was dealt with immediately once it became known.

“The headteacher implemented the school’s behaviour and safeguarding policies.

“The police were invited into the school to work alongside the headteacher to remind the children on the danger of knives.

“The headteacher realises this can be a very distressing situation for our parents and children, and the school has offered support to anyone requiring it.

“Our priority, as always, is to ensure a safe learning environment for all our children.”
