FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze at a derelict industrial unit.

Six crews have been called to the estate in Alma Street, off South Street, Lancing.

They received the call shortly before 3pm today, and crews from Littlehampton, Worthing, Brighton, and Hove were called.

A cherrypicker was sent to the scene, and crews used specialist breathing masks and hose reel jets to tackle the flames.

The Argus:

Nearby resident Neil Berry saw the incident. He said: "I thought I heard a bonfire going or something, so I opened my back door and could feel the heat in my face.

The Argus:

"I have a small courtyard, so I was worried about the flames coming over, it could easily have caused outbuildings to catch fire.

"Fortunately the fire brigade arrived at the back and got it under control."

Police cordoned off the street nearby while fire crews brought the flames under control.

The Argus:

The fire service said the building is a derelict industrial unit. It is understood it was used for laundry, and has been empty for 15 years.
