THE roof of a double decker school bus collapsed after an "accident" near a bridge.

The top deck of the bus was destroyed and left crumpled and misshapen following the incident this morning.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "At 8.41am a double-decker bus was in collision with the railway bridge over the B2116 Keymer Road, Hassocks.

The Argus:

"The bus was empty, apart from the driver who was unhurt.

"The road was temporarily blocked, re-opening at 9.30 am."

Heritage, the coach company which owns the bus involved, also responded to the incident.

A spokesman said: "The driver was returning from the school run with an empty bus which was out of service.

"We cannot comment further."

At hthe time of the crash an AA spokesman warned of delays in the area as a result of the crash.

The Argus:

He said: "The road is partially blocked and there are delays due to an accident involving a bus on the B2116 Keymer Road, outside Hassocks station."
