POLICE have said the seafront road will most likely be closed all day after a hit and run.

The A259 at Marine Parade has been shut since the early hours of Sunday.

Driver reported "traffic chaos" this morning after diversions were set up.

Two men suffered serious head injuries after being run over by a car following a fight.

Another man was also taken to hospital for treatment after being mowed down on Marine Parade.

Officers were called to the scene shortly after 5.20am after a report of a large group of people fighting with weapons.

While police were responding to the incident, some of the group are thought to have got into a vehicle which then hit three men who were involved in the fight.

A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and the three men were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, two with serious head injuries.

Detective Inspector Chris Thompson said: "This is a fast-moving investigation and we are appealing for anyone who may have seen the incident or has any information about it to come forward.

"Marine Parade is currently closed between the pier roundabout and Camelford Street while we carry out enquiries and I would like to thank the public for their patience."

The suspect remains in custody.

The vehicle was later found abandoned.

Sussex Police have said the incident was not terror-related and are appealing for anyone with information to contact detectives.

Anyone with information is asked to ring 101 and quote Operation Danebrige or contact Sussex Police through their website.
