A TABLE tennis club has released a charity single to celebrate being named Britain’s best sports club.

Brighton Table Tennis Club released Build A Bridge today to celebrate its community achievements in the city.

Written by community outreach chief Nick Kreel and musician Phil Saatchi, the song calls on listeners to “build a bridge of love under the sun”.

Later the club will collect the club of the year gong at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Sport Awards in London.

The award comes more than a decade after the club was founded by friends Tim Holtam, Harry McCarney, and Wen Wei Xu with two worn-out tables.

Twelve years later, the club helps more than 1,500 people in the city to play table tennis, running 100 tables in parks, schools and prisons.

Trustee Bill Randall said Brighton Table Tennis Club was “one of the city’s brightest sporting lights”.

“It helps people from many communities and all ages keep fit in mutual support and friendship,” he said.

“It’s a place of hope, solidarity and opportunity.”

The club’s new single, which they hope will reach number one in time for Christmas, was recorded by 20 club members.

It was recorded in Livingston Studio in London, a haunt of music royalty including rapper Kanye West, Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant, and ska band The Specials. Henry Crallan, who opened the studio and was a keen table tennis player, donated a day of recording at Livingston after his death four years ago.

The club’s founders will pick up the award at a star-studded ceremony in Grosvenor House, London, later today.

Sporting legends including footballer Sir Kenny Dalglish, track runner Dame Kelly Holmes, and cyclist Sir Chris Hoy will attend.

TV presenter Ben Shephard will host the awards.
