A TRADITIONAL family pantomime will see Dick Whittington and his famous cat visiting this month, helping to raise funds for a Sussex-based charity in the process.

Now in its fifth year at Hove’s Windmill Theatre, the Brighton and Hove Traditional Family Pantomime will take audiences from the paved streets of Britain to the golden shores of Morocco, but will Dick be able to outwit the rotten King Rat, free London from his team of revolting rodents and win the beautiful Alice’s hand in marriage?

This year’s production has been written and directed by Connor Baum, a familiar face to many as he has acted in every one of the panto’s past productions in Hove.

“Pantomime is one of Britain’s greatest festive traditions and it has never been more necessary or more relevant,” said Connor.

Connor added that the traditional family panto is keeping the “homegrown, community focused aspect of pantomime alive,” with a cast “combining local talent and a professional production team.”

He added: “Laughter and song are great unifiers when living in divided times. With another General Election looming and a potential Brexit disaster close behind it, it has never been more essential to examine the communities in which we live, to come together and to celebrate what makes us similar rather than what divides us.”

Producer Robert Baum said that this year’s panto has been “fantastic in rehearsals” and “action packed from beginning to end.”

“Everything is done in house,” Robert said.

“We keep the ticket prices low and offer lots of group discounts so that the whole family can come and enjoy the show.

“Every year, we raise money for a local cause and our recent offering Snow White raised more than £3,000 for charity from the profits,” said Connor.

“We are hoping to do even better than that this year with our current offering.”

This year’s production will be raising funds for Chestnut Tree House, a children’s hospice charity that provides care for children and young adults who have been diagnosed with progressive life-shortening conditions.

Dick Whittington will be performed at Hove Windmill Theatre from December 21 to 29 (excluding Christmas Day)
