I QUITE understand why people voted to leave the EU and respect the result because it was held on the basis of our existing electoral system.

But I am concerned that the word democracy is used.

I am also concerned that the vote was to leave with no mention of a deal but that’s for another day.

Our electoral system is broken and has been for some time.

Democracy is Government by the people or their elected representatives but there is no mention of some of the people.

If we want democracy we must surely ensure that as far as possible all the people vote.

There are systems that could have been adopted long ago to ensure that this happened but even after Blair commissioned the Jenkins Report on Electoral Reform in 1998 which would have allowed a debate on the subject, we did nothing because I am afraid the current system suits the two main parties.

Party before country? In the referendum 17.4 million voted to leave, 16.1 million voted to remain, 12.9 million did not vote and roughly nine million were not on the register  due to Government incompetence or a willful lack of action.

Now we are holding another election using the same rotten system, so could we be honest and say that the result of the referendum and subsequent elections are simply the will of some of the people.

We will only achieve democracy if and when we change the system.
