A FERRY smashed through two concrete columns as it hit a pier.
The incident happened at Newhaven Port at 10.33am.
Adam Dove was fishing from the pier with his friend Tom Hickling when the ferry began to veer towards it.
He said: "People on the boat were shouting at us but we thought it was because our fishing bucket was rolling down the beach at the time.
"It wasn't until the boat hit that I realised what they were shouting about.
"The ferry hit the pier hard, with a loud bang.
"It hit it with enough force to break two concrete columns.
"The port authorities responded quickly and came to check the damage.
"They took photos and also asked if we were OK.
"The pilot of the boat said, 'I bet that's scared the fish away now'."
A spokesman for Newhaven Port confirmed the incident.
He said: "The boat had a technical problem on board and lost control.
"They made contact with the East Pier.
"The captain made the correct decision to come back in, in case there was any underwater damage.
"The boat has now been checked and the damage has been assessed, and it will be departing as soon as the weather permits it.
"The East Pier is currently cordoned off but it is safe on top.
"It was the structure underneath the pier which was damaged."
