THE M23 has reopened after it was closed due to severe flooding.

Sussex Roads Police said the motorway is now open again in both directions. The force thanked Highways England for "some sterling efforts at pumping away an awful lot of water."

This morning, Sussex Police shut the motorway off both ways between junctions 10 and 11 this morning.

The motorway remained closed until around 2.30pm.

Workers attempted to clear the floodwater and several pumps were being used to drain the road.

Earlier, traffic had been queuing for four miles from the Copthorne Way Crawley exit to the Pease Pottage A23 exit.

The Argus:

There were also reports of an accident within the queues, just before Pease Pottage.

The police said large numbers of officers had been trying to ease the traffic by closing slip roads in the area and moving vehicles stuck in the water.

The police said the delays were expected to continue for a long time. The Argus:
