THE Argus Cafe of the year has been named.

Roedean Cafe in Marine Drive, Brighton, picks up the award, which is voted for by our readers, for the second year running.

The popular venue offers a great variety of delicious meals including, burgers, ham, egg and chips and all-day breakfasts.

Poul Jensen, 54, who owns the café with his partner, Sammy Berry, 48, have been working there for four years.

Asked why they thought the public voted for them, Ms Berry said: “I think it’s because of our customers really, they’re coming in all the time and they’re a really good mix of people.

“We have got really lovely staff too who produce simple food well.”

Mr Jensen said: “It’s definitely got to be because of the quality of the food.

“It’s like a greasy spoon without the grease.

“We get so many regulars too which is great and it’s not seasonal either with our customers, obviously in the winter it’s not as busy as it is in the summer.”

The couple also own the miniature golf course in the grounds surrounding the café, which has always been a popular attraction.

Another reason the place is so popular is the great view over the marina.

Ms Berry said: “The view’s not bad.

“It’s beautiful, especially in the summer, and even on a really windy day you can see the waves coming over.”

Roedean Café has even served a couple of famous faces over the years.

Mr Jensen said: “We’ve served Daley Thompson and once we had Rag ’n’ Bone Man come in and he had a Roedean special.

“It’s a big boy, it’s two of everything, bacon, tomatoes, hash browns, eggs, toast, beans and a coffee.”

Roedean Café will be closing its doors during the Christmas period.

Ms Berry said: “We’re closed for three days over Christmas because we celebrate Danish style too.

“Boxing Day would be a good one, but we just want to let our staff have some time off. Everyone needs a break – the building will need a break.”
