FLOODING is causing "severe delays" on the A27.

The road near Shoreham is covered in water and services are on the scene trying to clear the flooding.

A passerby said: "You definitely don't want to be heading east right now.

"One lane is totall flooded and the tailbacks are stretching right back to Lancing and Sompting from the airport.

"It's very slow and the cars further back in the queues are not moving at all.

"People are currently putting bollards around the flooded area and letting cars through single file."

Highways England officers are currently on the scene.

A spokesman said: "On the A27 in the Shoreham area there is a large amount of flooding that our area team is currently dealing with.

"Please take care in the area and drive to road conditions."

An AA spokesman warned of "severe delays" in the area.

He said: "There is one lane closed and queueing traffic due to flooding on the A27 Shoreham By Pass eastbound between the A2025 Grinstead Lane (Sompting Roundabout) and the A283 Steyning Road (Steyning turn off).

"There is a gully sucker on scene to clear the flooding on the road.

"There are severe delays of twelve minutes but these delays are easing on the Upper Brighton Road Eastbound between the A27 Upper Brighton Road and A27 Shoreham By Pass (Sussex Pad Traffic Lights).

"The average speed is ten mph.

"There also temporary traffic signals due to gas main work on Manor Road at Nursery Close."
