THE FAMILY of a murdered woman have paid tribute to her bravery.

Sandy Seagrave, 76, was found dead outside a house in Hazel Way, Crawley Down earlier this week, along with 32-year-old Amy Appleton.

The road was cordoned off by police as a murder investigation was launched.

A 37-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of their murder, was found seriously injured inside a house.

He remains on life support at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Following the incident, Ms Seagrave’s family praised her bravery.

In a statement they said: “She was one of a kind, an eccentric character who was stubbornly independent, feisty, brave and not afraid of anything.

“She was devoted to children and especially animals, including a wild fox who we are continuing to feed now that she has gone.”

Tributes were also paid to Ms Appleton, who was a teacher at the Copthorne Church of England School.

One person said: “Amy was such a lovely person. She loved getting involved in local stuff. She loved being part of community, particularly the church and school.”

Detective Chief Inspector Alex Geldart is leading the investigation after police were called at 10.20am on Sunday, December 22.

She said: “This is a tragic incident which has led to the death of two local women, one of whom was known to the suspect.

“Members of the public, police and paramedics did all they could to help the victims but sadly the two women died at the scene.

“I extend my heartfelt sympathies to their families, who are being supported by specialist trained officers.

“Extensive enquiries are taking place along with a forensic examination.

“A cordon will remain in the area while we gather evidence and we appreciate the support and understanding of local residents.”

Police confirmed a 37-year-old man, found seriously injured inside the property, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of murder.

He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, where he remained on life support on Friday afternoon.

Earlier detectives ruled out speculation that the incident had involved a knife.

Chief Superintendent Jerry Westerman said: “While we are investigating, officers will be available in the area over the next few days to reassure the community and if anyone wants to talk to them about their concerns or if they have any information they should talk with them.

“This is an isolated yet shocking incident that has shaken many in the community. We are thankful to them for supporting officers as they go about their enquiries.”
