The future of the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service control centre is set to be decided this week.

It comes after East Sussex Fire Authority deferred a decision on whether to share control centre operations as part of a three-way partnership with Surrey and West Sussex fire services.

While recommended for approval by senior officers, a decision was put off in October as councillors raised concerns about being “rushed” into the multi-million pound outsourcing deal.

They said they did not have enough information about the alternatives available – including whether ESFRS could run its own standalone control room in Lewes.

Officers were told to provide more information both on the potential for a standalone control room and the partnership proposals.

This further information is to be discussed by East Sussex Fire Authority on Thursday.

The partnership proposal is likely to cost the fire authority more than £11 million over the next seven years but would lead to “immediate operational benefits” as a result of the sharing of resources, officers said. It would also affect the roles of control room staff at the current control centre at Haywards Heath Fire Station.
