WITH regard to your article on our rotting arches, pointing out the dire need for work to start asap and with Jax Atkins expecting the council will do nothing.

Well, I and many others who read the article will be thinking you’re not alone there Jax.

It’s my betting there will be so much cast iron going the same way the lead and copper went, this Labour/Green coalition administration will then have no alternative in deciding (due to higher replacement costs) to scrap the whole of those arches.

I remember our Bird Cage bandstand being allowed (by the then Labour administration) to go the same way.

They even had the access gantry removed and that consequently disappeared, adding to them trying to justify the need to dispose of the whole lot.

If it wasn’t for the Conservatives taking control in 2011 and deciding not to wait for a decision for Heritage lottery funding (which never materialised anyway) and then getting quickly on with that problem in hand we’d have seen the last of our now beautiful Victorian Bird Cage.
