ENGINEERING works on a busy railway line have overrun causing disruption to train services.

Several lines were blocked at Gatwick Airport with disruption expected until 8am.

The lines reopened shortly after 7am but Southern Rail warned that though "services running through this station are returning to normal" they "may still be cancelled or delayed".

A spokesman said: "Engineering work taking place between Gatwick Airport and Three Bridges has overrun.

"This affects the fast and express lines between the two stations, in both directions.

"Ultimately, this means some congestion may build up in the area, and some alterations will take place to keep the service running smoothly."

This includes the Gatwick Express running to and from Brighton.

A spokesman for Network Rail Kent and Sussex said: "We’re incredibly sorry for the disruption this morning which is impacting passengers through Gatwick on Southern Rail, Thameslink and Gatwick Express services."

At 8am it was reported that train services in the area had returned to normal.
