POLICE Tasered and fired rubber bullets at a man who ran towards the public with a knife.
Armed police shot the man with the riot control weapon just after midday in Lewes Road, Brighton.
Sussex Police said the man "ran towards members of the public" when armed officers approached.
The force said they had fired a "baton round" and stunned the man in order to protect the public.
A 19-year-old was detained on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. Nobody else was harmed.
A witness said he had seen armed officers pointing a gun at the man outside the bus depot.
David Sanders, 65, said he had seen the officers running towards the man after pulling up in an unmarked police 4x4.
