A COUNCIL plans to ban releasing balloons at public events.

Brighton and Hove City Council has proposed banning the release of “sky litter” like paper lanterns and balloons at events on council-owned land.

It said “sky litter” had a damaging effect on animals, birds and fish because they can be mistaken for food.

And it claimed releasing paper lanterns could be a fire risk, alluding to a deadly zoo fire in Germany allegedly started by fire lanterns.

City council tourism chief, councillor Alan Robins said it wanted Brighton’s events to be eco-friendly.

“The city is well-known for our fabulous events and we have been leading the way on supporting sustainable events management for some time,” he said.

“Most organisers want to make a positive contribution to reducing emissions and environmental concerns are high on their agenda. For example Brighton and Hove Pride, The Great Escape and Brighton Marathon made great efforts last year.”
