TONNES of rubbish have been cleared from the side of a busy road.

A team from Lewes District Council made the most of a series of overnight closures of the A27 to clean up the area.

A spokesman for the authority said: “With a section of the A27 closed overnight this week, our waste crew has been taking the chance to clear the litter from the roadside.

“We’re also working with Highways England and our neighbouring authorities on how we can best tackle the issue of littering on this road for good.

“Over three nights this week the team cleared more than three and a half tonnes and also took the opportunity to clear all the drains on the A27 using a mechanical sweeper.

“We’re really proud of the team for all their hard work.”

Works have been carried out to replace the steel barriers between the Ashcombe and Southerham roundabouts near Lewes as the existing barrier is corroding so a new one is needed.
