THE mayor of Brighton and Hove has questioned whether the monarchy should remain after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex resigned as senior royals.

Green councillor Alex Phillips asked whether the incident was a sign that “enough is enough”.

She said: “With utmost respect to the Queen, we’ve got young people checking out of their regal responsibilities, Meghan and Harry.

“Given this, and the Prince Andrew revelations, maybe it’s time to move away from the monarchy?

“Is this a sign that enough is enough?”

Her comments come after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex released a statement saying they would “make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution”.

The royal couple said: “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.

“It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.

“We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth and our patronages.”

In a statement responding to the revelation, Buckingham Palace said that “discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage”.

A spokesman added: “We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”

But the BBC reported that senior royals were reported to be “hurt” and “disappointed” by the sudden move.

The broadcaster added that “no other royal – including the Queen or Prince William – was consulted before the statement”.

Many Brighton and Hove residents supported Harry and Meghan in their actions.

Kane Wilson-Fitzgerald, 28, said: “My opinion is that it’s all about the kid.

“If you look at the family recently, they don’t look happy.

“It must be traumatic for them to always be in the public eye.”
