THERE is a high chance of “heavy snow” hitting the South East over the coming days.

The Met Office has put a “severe weather alert” in place and told residents there is “a 70 per cent probability of severe cold weather, icy conditions or heavy snow”.

Brighton and Hove could wake up to see the city covered by a blanket of the white stuff as early as next week.

The cold spell is forecast to last for three days - from 6pm on Sunday to 6pm on Tuesday.

The Met Office issued a warning to elderly and vulnerable people living in the county.

A spokesman said: “This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services.

“Prolonged periods of cold weather can be dangerous, especially for older people, those with underlying health conditions, and young children.

“If you’re able, ask if your friends, family or neighbours need any support.

“Stock up on foods and medicines so you don’t have to go out too much when it’s cold or icy.

“When indoors, stay warm, heat homes to at least 18°C, and keep up-to-date with the weather forecast.”

The Argus:

The Met Office has placed a level two weather alert in place in Sussex, urging residents to be "alert and ready" for the cold spell.

The weather service said the freezing conditions would be caused by “high pressure building across the country over the weekend and into early next week”.

It added: “This will bring a spell of dry weather and light winds, with overnight frosts becoming widespread.”

The Met Office will be keeping a keen eye on the situation and providing daily updates at 9am.
