LOYAL customers were left "gutted" as a much-loved music venue announced it would be closing its doors.

The Richmond in Richmond Place, Brighton, said it was shutting in a statement on Friday.

A spokesman also said that Home Brighton, backpackers' accommodation which is on the same site, will also be closing.

The statement said that a new owner for the premises was currently being sought to keep the bar open

A spokesman for the venue said: "The Richmond and Home Brighton are closing for business.

"We are seeking a new owner who will continue the music venue and community that has been built up."

He said the venue would be open until Saturday, January 18, then it would be "taking a break".

The spokesman added: "Everyone - and we mean promoters, ex-staff, artists and all the guests who have been involved in the last three years - is welcome to have a goodbye drink.

"Many thanks for supporting us over the years, and we are as gutted as you to be closing the doors.

"If you think you can be the venue's next bar-owner, get in touch at info@therichmondbar.co.uk.

"We are looking for a quick sale so that all the events booked in can continue."

The statement was released on The Richmond's social media page and was met with disappointment from fans of the venue.

One said: "(I'm) so gutted, thanks for all the bizarre and beautiful shows I saw here, for the wonderful and lush bar staff and for the gorgeous welcome I always felt.

"I heard this (news) a while back (but) I was hoping it wasn't real."

Another added: "So sad to hear you're closing, I had many a great night playing at the Richmond."
