ENVIRONMENTALISTS have welcomed a council motion to investigate prohibiting cars.

The environment, transport and sustainability committee at Brighton an d Hove City Council approved a motion on Tuesday to investigate whether it would be feasible to ban cars from the city centre.

Members of Extinction Rebellion Brighton demonstrated outside Hove Town Hall wearing dust masks.

A spokesman for the group said: “It’s clear that bold, ambitious policies are needed to tackle the twin problems of toxic pollution from vehicle exhausts and the climate emergency.

“By passing this motion, councillors have shown they take the health of residents seriously by taking firm steps towards a solution.

“In order to reach the city’s ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030 we need huge cuts in transport emissions.”
