A FURIOUS Asda customer has vowed to boycott the supermarket after receiving a £70 fine from its car park.

Clive Blair-Stevens, 62, has been using the Asda car park at Brighton Marina since it was opened more than 30 years ago.

But the driver from Hove was shocked and infuriated when he received a fine for parking outside permitted hours.

He said he was unaware of the rules because of poor signage in the area.

Mr Blair-Stevens is the second person this week to complain about the car park.

He said: “I have said to Asda that I will personally be boycotting them from now on until I have a clear response from them and it seems like really stupid business nonsense to anger or upset regular customers.

“I assume this is affecting a number of people.

“It should be highlighted so that others don’t fall into the trap of being fined when they thought it was OK to park.”

Mr Blair-Stevens said he parked in the car park at 10am on a Sunday, as he had done “tens of times before”.

But he was later sent an “outstanding amount due” for £70 by ParkingEye, the company contracted by Asda in Brighton Marina.

Drivers are allowed three hours free parking if they are shopping in the Asda store. However, no parking is allowed from 10.30pm on Saturday to 10am on Sunday and from 5.30pm on Sunday to 6.30am on Monday.

Mr Blair-Stevens said: “I was not aware that you had to pay to park there.

“I thought the Asda car park was completely free before I saw a number of people online who were frustrated that it happened to them as well.”

Earlier this week, The Argus reported how unsuspecting 61-year-old Dugald Munro was also issued a fine.

He said he was unaware of the signage.

An Asda spokesman said: “Following feedback from local residents we implemented cameras to prevent our Brighton Marina store car park from being misused, but we would like to reassure our customers that they can still park there free of charge for up to three hours whilst the store is open.

“There is clear signage across the car park and we would like to thank the majority of our customers who use the it responsibly.’’

A ParkingEye spokesman said there were nearly 30 signs across the site, including at the entrance and exit.
