A MAN threatened shoppers with a “Taser” in a busy street.

Police rushed to the scene in Terminus Road, Eastbourne, and took the man to the ground as they arrested him.

Officers were called at 6.30pm yesterday to a report that the man was approaching passers-by with what he claimed was a Taser.

The force said he was taken to the ground without any injuries and the action was necessary so “a potentially dangerous situation did not escalate”.

A 52-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear and is currently in custody for interview and further enquiries.

The device was not discharged. It was seized and is being examined to establish exactly what it is.

Detective inspector Mark Rosser said: “This was a professional and robust response by our two colleagues which ensured that any risk of further danger to the public was nipped in the bud.”
