Lego before Lego

THE plastic pieces are known and loved worldwide with children and adults crafting wonderful creations out of the bobbly blocks.

The popular play-things have recreated scenes from some of the most successful film franchises including Harry Potter and Star Wars.

But where did it all start?

The Lego Before Lego exhibition at the Brighton Toy Museum in Trafalgar Street will take visitors from the Danish company’s humble beginnings as a wooden toy-maker in 1932 to the present day.

The collection contains original toy shop signage, scale vehicles, building blocks, farm vehicles, lovable characters and pull-along toys.

The museum will be open every day between 10am and 5pm.

Hove Local Monthly Market

WITH recent protests against fast-fashion and its reported environmental drawbacks, Hove Local Monthly Market provides a welcome alternative.

The event hosts a wide variety of stalls offering an eclectic mix of handcrafted, upcycled and vintage items as well as plenty of vegan food options.

Love is in the air at the market this month with many of the items on show being Valentine-themed - such as scented candles, soaps, textiles and cards.

It will be open between 1.30pm and 4.30pm on Saturday, February 1.

Boulder Brighton Climbing Centre

January has seen many people don their exercise gear and reach for a kale smoothie in an attempt to hit new fitness heights.

But there are plenty of ways to chase health outside of a conventional gym.

Boulder Brighton Climbing Centre is a good example of this.

The centre in Victoria Road Trading Estate, Portslade, opened in 2013 and is dedicated to bouldering - a fast-growing branch of rock climbing.

It provides climbers with a series of indoor walls with handles and angles, enabling them to haul themselves up an artificial rock-face.

The centre describes bouldering as “rock climbing stripped down to its raw essentials, leaving behind ropes and harnesses and just using climbing shoes and a bag of chalk over safety mats. It is open seven days a week between 8am and 10pm Monday to Friday and from 9am to 8pm on weekends.
