POLICE were called to reports of a person threatening to enter the water.
Coastguard crews were called to assist with the incident in Peacehaven at 1.35am.
A Newhaven Coastguard spokesman said:
“Police took the person safely into care before we arrived so we were stood down.”
He continued: “If you believe someone is in distress on the cliffs or at the coast, dial 999 and ask for coastguard.”
A Sussex Police spokesman said: "At 1.10am today police were called to the shore off South Coast Road, Peacehaven, after a report that a man was in a distressed state at the water's edge.
"Officers attended and brought him to safety 15 minutes later.
"He was uninjured and was taken for specialist medical assessment."
