YOUR report on Wednesday’s A259 gridlock is but a sad picture of what is to come with the huge housing developments underway in Peacehaven and, if it goes ahead, in St Aubyn’s field in Rottingdean.

Housing is desperately needed, affordable housing in particular (we shall see precious little of that) but it comes with responsibility for a viable and efficient infrastructure.

Lewes District/ East Sussex councils and their yes-men locally glibly approve these development plans with little or no thought as to the outcomes. One could be forgiven for believing that Peacehaven is viewed as an ‘anything will do’ location for their ill-thought schemes.

Medical and educational facilities are stretched to the limit now and we lost a police presence years ago.

The A259 is the only road in and out of our town and it is in woeful condition. A conservative estimate suggests that a further 900-plus people will be daily commuting East or West post development. How? by car? by public transport? It used to be that there was a long queue Westwards in the morning but now it’s East to Newhaven as well...oh and have any of our planners attempted the homeward afternoon journey from Brighton to Peacehaven/ Newhaven lately?

Brace yourselves! If the answer is public transport which it may well be, then let’s see a plan - at the moment you can sit stationary for ages in a bus until you hit the bus lane in Telscombe....

Does anyone have an answer? Water taxis(!)? Car- sharing? Or maybe it’s the healthy option of walking, running or cycling. One thing’s for certain, it’s only going to get worse.
